Web3 apps face four foundational challenges
Identity
- Web2: The identities of your customers and users are known.
- Web3: The vast majority of activity on the blockchain is pseudonymous.
Communication
- Web2: Users can be engaged by email, SMS, push notifications, and ad platforms.
- Web3: Communication channels and platform social graphs are only just being built.
Fragmented UX
- Web2: Users engage via your 1st party website and/or mobile app
- Web3: Users engage via a web of 3rd party apps (Twitter, Discord, Mirror, on-chain apps)
Platform Constraints
- Web2: Users with a smartphone (6.6B)
- Web3: Users with a crypto wallet (25M)
Powerful web3 growth levers at unprecedented scale
Airdrops
Definition: The distribution of a project’s own currency (tokens) to multiple crypto wallet addresses (users). Airdrops are fastest way to rally people to your project.
- OpenDAO airdropped the $SOS token to all users who had purchased an NFT on OpenSea, the largest NFT marketplace in December 2021.
- The airdrop reached 340K+ users, leading 150K to follow them on Twitter (account started on Dec 23, 2021) and 57K to join their Discord.
- Most importantly, 2.1K became active contributors. In web3, contributors are like “activations” but more meaningful. These contributors are shareholders who are financially incentivized to help the project grow.
Community
Definition: Communities are at the heart of web3 and often structured as Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs). A DAO is a community with a shared purpose and bank account.
- Community is critical in network growth because users often become key stakeholders:
- Early customers, testing & improving the product
- Cheerleaders, distributing the project
- Builders, assisting with both technical and non-technical support
- DAOs are rallying at scale. ConstitutionDAO raised $40M+ from 17.5K members in 72 hours in an attempt to purchase one of 13 copies of the original US constitution.
Integrations
Partnerships are often permissionless & fall into several categories:
- Token utility: Driving liquidity via exchange listings.
- Distribution: Integrating with wallets & frontend aggregators.
- Lego Building: Leveraging other projects to get more utility for your product.
